Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay

Christmas WonderlandCelebrating Christmas in tropical Singapore got a bit more special this year with over 30 impressive Italian-crafted Luminarie light sculptures and a European-style Festive Market set up at Gardens by the Bay.

Christmas Wonderland

A giant Christmas tree decorated with the Gardens’ signature dragonfly motif greets visitors at the Golden Garden, near the main attraction’s entrance. You can also see the 16-metre tall Frontone arrival arches, the first of the Luminarie light sculptures, leading you into a Christmas Wonderland located in the Flower Dome and the Supertree Grove.

Christmas Wonderland

The Luminaries light sculptures inspired by 16th and 17th-century Baroque architecture were hand-crafted by Paulicelli Illuminations International, a family of Italian craftsmen. I must say the specially-designed pieces blended very well into the tranquil atmosphere of the Gardens.

Christmas Wonderland

Some 95,000 bulbs were used to create the Luminaries, and each bulb meticulously placed by hand before being carefully shipped to Singapore.

Christmas Wonderland

At 17 metres tall and 31 metres wide, the Spalliera located just in front of Supertree Dining is the largest of the Luminaries.

Christmas Wonderland

Other than being a fab photo spot, also look out for the daily “Blizzard Time” (7.30PM, 8.20PM, 9.05PM and 9.45PM; weather permitting) where ‘snow’ made of foam is released to create a wintry scene.

Other than the light sculptures, you can explore the European-style Festive Market at the Supertree Grove.

The spectacular Spiegeltent, a two-century old travelling ‘mirror tent’ from the Netherlands makes its first appearance in Asia under the Supertrees. Made of 1,000 pieces of wood, canvas, brocade, exquisite mirrors and stained glass, visitors will get a chance to dine within this enchanting tent for a unique gastronomic experience.

Christmas Wonderland

Originally built in the late 19th and 20th century, only a handful remains in existence. Did you know this particular tent was once found abandoned at a railway station? Now it’s lovingly restored and travelling the world. What a fairytale.

Do drop by for a different Christmas experience in the tropics, and say cheese! :)

YINFD_01
This Christmas, the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay transforms into a winter wonderland with Teddy Santa on a sleigh, illuminated reindeers, enchanting light sculptures and a mini Christmas village set amidst cheery festive blooms. Temperatures have been turned down as well, so come in your winter best for that picture-perfect moment with a loved one, muaks :)

Even reindeers play hard to get

The bird sculptures also got a festive makeover. I wonder what this one saw, maybe a roast turkey haha

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

Have a rwarrING good time with colourful lanterns at Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens on 13-22 Sep 2013!

I love Mid-Autumn. It’s a time when I can be a child again, and carry brightly-lit traditional cellophane lanterns around with good friends without raising any eyebrows. This year, I had a visual feast of colourful lanterns at Gardens by the Bay which is hosting the Mid-Autumn Festival for the first time. And it’s FREE! :D

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

Majestic Temple of Confucius in the middle of the Dragonfly Lake. How cool is that – premium waterfront living!

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

The dragon in this lantern display is made up of 80,000 test tubes filled with coloured water. All the lanterns are made locally by master craftsmen from China.

I must say the cooled conservatories make a pretty nice backdrop for the lantern display

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

For visitors coming in the daytime, the Flower Dome houses a Mid-Autumn themed floral display featuring three dragonfly lanterns perched amidst a field of vibrant flora such as begonias, chrysanthemums, astilbes and celosias. For me – this would be the easiest insect macro I’ve ever done! lol

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

Magnificent scenery at night. I stood still for 5 minutes just to admire this.

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

It’s packed at the 101-hectare Gardens – amazing feat!

What’s more apt than an Avatar experience in the midst of mystical SuperTrees at Supertree Grove? Presented by Keppel Club, this unique exhibition offers visitors a 3D experience as they admire hand-made exhibits built from recycling materials by the staff of Keppel Club.

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

I got a bit hungry from all the walking and was quite pleased to find my fave snacks at the food stalls – smelly tofu and sour plum drink. Satisfaction. Heehee.

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

It was nice to see families enjoying themselves and keeping the traditional of Mid-Autumn reunion & harmony alive.

Mid-Autumn @ The Gardens 2013

Who says lanterns are only for the Chinese culture?
Our Malay friends came by as well, and everyone bonded together over a candlelight. These people didn’t know each other, and were just happy to lend a light. Awwww….I’m feeling warm & fuzzy again.

Winning Entries from the Creative Lantern-Making Competition
This piece won first prize. I must say I am quite impressed with the lanterns, all the twinkling LED lights and movable parts . I felt so archaic thinking of the lanterns I used to make in school.
