Night Festival Singapore 2017: Convolutions by EZ3kiel

Night Festival 2017 - Convolutions by EZ3kiel

The Singapore Night Festival returns for its 10th at the Bras Basah-Bugis precinct with a spectacular light projection, art performances and installations, and complimentary museum entry till midnight. The festival is spread amongst five zones – National Museum, Armenian Street, Cathay Green, Singapore Management University and Singapore Art Museum. New for this year, you can also go on a festival bike trail with bicycles borrowed from the National Museum.

This particular light mapping art installation on the facade of the National Museum by Frenchman Yann Nguema wowed many at the festival opening. It was one of the best light projections I have seen in Singapore. Titled Convolutions, the projection will be on for all nine days of the Night Festival. This particular piece was adapted from the artist’s iconic piece titled Evolutions that was show on Cathedral St Jean in Lyon, France, as part of the Fete des Lumieres (Festival of Lights), the world’s oldest and grandest light festival, last year. New elements added to the showpiece include a lion.

Night Festival Singapore 2017 takes places from 18 till 26 Aug, with most performances happening on 24-26 Aug (looking forward to Globe by Close-Act Theatre).

Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay

Christmas WonderlandCelebrating Christmas in tropical Singapore got a bit more special this year with over 30 impressive Italian-crafted Luminarie light sculptures and a European-style Festive Market set up at Gardens by the Bay.

Christmas Wonderland

A giant Christmas tree decorated with the Gardens’ signature dragonfly motif greets visitors at the Golden Garden, near the main attraction’s entrance. You can also see the 16-metre tall Frontone arrival arches, the first of the Luminarie light sculptures, leading you into a Christmas Wonderland located in the Flower Dome and the Supertree Grove.

Christmas Wonderland

The Luminaries light sculptures inspired by 16th and 17th-century Baroque architecture were hand-crafted by Paulicelli Illuminations International, a family of Italian craftsmen. I must say the specially-designed pieces blended very well into the tranquil atmosphere of the Gardens.

Christmas Wonderland

Some 95,000 bulbs were used to create the Luminaries, and each bulb meticulously placed by hand before being carefully shipped to Singapore.

Christmas Wonderland

At 17 metres tall and 31 metres wide, the Spalliera located just in front of Supertree Dining is the largest of the Luminaries.

Christmas Wonderland

Other than being a fab photo spot, also look out for the daily “Blizzard Time” (7.30PM, 8.20PM, 9.05PM and 9.45PM; weather permitting) where ‘snow’ made of foam is released to create a wintry scene.

Other than the light sculptures, you can explore the European-style Festive Market at the Supertree Grove.

Christmas Wonderland

The spectacular Spiegeltent, a two-century old travelling ‘mirror tent’ from the Netherlands makes its first appearance in Asia under the Supertrees. Made of 1,000 pieces of wood, canvas, brocade, exquisite mirrors and stained glass, visitors will get a chance to dine within this enchanting tent for a unique gastronomic experience.

Christmas Wonderland

Originally built in the late 19th and 20th century, only a handful remains in existence. Did you know this particular tent was once found abandoned at a railway station? Now it’s lovingly restored and travelling the world. What a fairytale.

Christmas Wonderland

Do drop by for a different Christmas experience in the tropics, and say cheese! :)

i Light Marina Bay - CELEBRATION OF LIFE

CELEBRATION OF LIFE
JUSTIN LEE WITH DORIER ASIA PTE LTD
Part of i Light Marina Bay
Celebration of Life is a playful commentary on the role and value of traditional culture in our contemporary society, Through the use of Pop-art as a playful medium in this work, this installation celebrates Asian values in our modern society through a tongue-in-cheek manner. In this 3D projection installation for the ArtScience Museum, Justin playfully blends traditional Eastern iconography with modern-day symbols of our global capitalist culture. This approach suggests cultural resilience – the ability of Asian culture, to survive, to withstand, to endure, and to adapt to the changing contemporary society.

i Light Marina Bay 2014 - Cloud

I call this The Magic Cloud. Teleporting in progress!
CLOUD is a large-scale interactive sculpture created from 6,000 light bulbs (new and burnt out) by Canadian artists Caitlind Brown & Wayne Garrett. The piece utilizes everyday domestic light bulbs and pull strings, re-imagining their potential to create wonder and inspire collaboration. As part of the process of creating the sculpture, the artists collected burnt out incandescent light bulbs from the surrounding community, forging an informal relationship with non-artists, reducing costs, and asking audiences to reconsider household items in an alternative context. During exhibition, viewers interact with CLOUD by initiating impromptu collaborations, working as a collective to turn the entire sculpture on and off. This is easily one of the more popular installations at i Light Marina Bay 2014.
