MMMmmm…I think my wallet is in trouble again

Maison Martin Margiela x H&M

Maison Martin Margiela x H&M

After months of anticipation, the Maison Martin Margiela x H&M lookbook is finally unveiled! Here’s a peek from the 140-piece collection which launches 15 November at H&M stores world-wide. Inspiration for the collection came from MMM’s iconic pieces, featuring androgynous tailoring, asymmetry, oversize silhouettes and the maison’s trademark humour.

There’s only one problem with the collection – I can’t find anything I don’t like! I think I’m gonna melt my credit card with this one…oh dear. 15 November – quick come. I’m drooling all over the lookbook already. Follow the collaboration hashtag #MargielawithHM to get the latest updates.

4 Oct: The Day I Caught Crocodiles, Snakes and Lots of Gold

Anna Dello Russo for H&M Accessories Collection

My stash of Anna Dello Russo at H&M! I think I burnt a large hole in my pocket, boo hoo!

4 October was the day I caught a crocodile, lots of snakes and gold. Nope, I haven’t turned Indiana Jones, I just went to try my luck at getting some of Anna Dello Russo at H&M jewelry pieces. It was definitely a good day, cos’ I got every single piece I was craving for, plus a few more (naughty hands, I told you to leave those alone!!).

The store at Orchard Building, Singapore opened at 10AM. Customers were let in by the 20s, and given 10 minutes to shop. A useful tip would be to note down the items you want and map out your route while queuing, cos’ once you enter you only have 10 minutes and it will be like a supermarket dash.I always remembered my first H&M collaboration – I wasn’t aware of the 10-minute rule, and got a rude shock when the store announced “Customer, you have one minute left.” Lucky that I am a well-trained shopaholic *wink*

It was good there were mannequins showing which shelves the items I wanted were at.

Mad rush to grab like they were free. The trolley cases went the fastest, followed by the mini clutches and turquoise bangles. Heard the collection did really well in Europe. While the items did move, I didn’t really feel the excitement or hear any squeals from ecstatic shoppers at the Singapore store. Most of the shoppers were Caucasians or Middle Eastern…perhaps the collection was a bit too loud for the typical Singaporean.

Store Display. I am amazed I still managed to find time to take some photos LOL! I think the sales staff were astonished too, cos’ the other shoppers were so busy grabbing stuff! Oh dear, I think I am going blog-crazy LOL.

My 2 bagfuls in a 10-minute spree. Damn. My wallet bleeds.

Opening up my stash at home…

This is my favourite piece in the collection. I first saw a similar crocodile choker in a Korean drama and searched high and low for it but to no avail – perhaps cos’ it’s so crazy the manufacturers doubted they could find enough crazy people to buy it. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw this.

Amazing bejeweled 3-coil snake bangle

An intricate snake choker. I must say the pieces are quite well-made for a high street brand.

Gold bling-bling coil bracelet. I have so many wonderful pieces to attend events with chum Darren! He always makes me laugh with his ‘who-on-earth-would-wear-that?!’ expression and humorous comments – yeah, at my expense.

Anna Dello Russo for H&M Accessories Collection

Oooh, this is SO pretty. I will feel like a baroness in a Victorian era wearing this. Absolutely lurve it!

Anna Dello Russo for H&M Accessories Collection

Over-the-top sunnies. I am so loving the crocodile sunnies, although the left one with a chain feels a bit heavy. Let’s see how the wear test goes.

Anna Dello Russo for H&M Accessories Collection

I wasted no time in wearing my croco sunnies to a swell staycation with an amazing swimming pool.

That’s Darren’s response to my sunnies – “You’ve gone looney, girl!” haha :D

Watch this blog as I debut the rest of the pieces on Look of the Day!

4 Oct: Anna Dello Russo For H&M

Anna Dello Russo

Anna Dello Russo, Editor At Large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan, has designed a 50-piece accessory collection for H&M which launches 4 Oct world-wide. Once described by Helmut Newton as a “fashion maniac”, the Queen of Bling’s collection is mostly gold and chunk that Queen Cleopatra and Donnatella Versace would approve of. Inspiration for the collection came in the form of Anna’s wardrobe (and her 4,000 pairs of shoes – ok, I definitely lose). Her Tiffany blue with gold filigree detail cupboard was the starting inspiration for the 50-piece collection, most obviously influencing the suitcase design. Other items include sunglasses, crocodile and snake-adorned jewelry, clutch bags emblazoned with her dog Cucciolina, thigh-high leather boots as well as a bird fascinator with a netted veil. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Anna has released a pop video to celebrate the release of her accessories range for H&M. Wearing a PVC mini-dress, sheposes on a giant gold shoe as she reveals her collection along with her ‘ten rules of fashion’. It left me a bit dumbfounded, cos’ I don’t really know what to make of it. Have a look and tell me what you think.

Anna’s Ten Rules of Fashion (say it with an Italian accent to get the most oomph)
1. Fashion is a declaration of your own freedom
2. Between style and fashion? Absolutely fashion
3. Fashion is always uncomfortable, if you feel comfortable you never get the look (AGREE)
4. Fabulous at every age
5. Wearing night clothes in the daytime is unexpected
6. Somebody wearing your same outfit? Wonderful, you did the right choice
7. You must wear outfit once (but we don’t have a wardrobe allowance like yours, Miss Russo)
8. Wear coat as a dress
9. It doesn’t matter the size of your body, fashion flatter everyone
10. Fashion jewels personalise your style. Nothing succeeds like excess

Touchingly, Anna remembers to contribute back to society: “Accepting this challenge [to design] has allowed me to give my personal and deeply felt contribution to the rebirth of Japan, a country I am strongly bonded with. Thereafter, part of my fee will be donated to the Japanese branch of the Red Cross International.” Yay, now I don’t feel that bad buying – I am doing my part for Japan too! :p Fingers crossed I can get my hands on some of these gems (crocodile – I have my eyes on you)!

15 NoveMMMber 2012: I have a date with H&M x Maison Martin Margiela!

Saw the news feed on my Facebook today and let out an elated screech – Swedish budget clothing retailer H&M has just announced that Maison Martin Margiela (MMM) would be designing a capsule collection of men’s and women’s clothes to go on sale online and in its 230 stores around the world this November – WOO HOO!

This follows past insanely popular H&M capsule collections by Versace, Comme des Garcons, Sonia Rykiel, Jimmy Choo and Marni. First reported in WWD, the speculation was quickly picked up a number of other fashion news outlets and only just confirmed by official sources.

Established by publicity-shy Belgian designer Martin Margiela in 1989, the house is famed for its cleft-toe boots, deconstructed tailoring and surrealist approach to classic fashion. The brand has become a staple in every fashionista’s closet just like a Hermes Birkin bag. Famously publicity-shy, Martin Margiela is rarely photographed, his clothes do not sport a proper tag, and MMM shops don’t even have its name on the shopfront. All this mysteriousness adds up to the mythical quality of the MMM brand, and makes it much coveted by many.

MMM Clothes Tag – An abstract matrix of numbers

Martin Margiela HK

MMM Store in Hong Kong. Don’t you just love the juxtaposition of high fashion with the lowly rubbish cart right in front of the store. Margiela would approve.

Which is why industry experts have called this a ‘surprising’ collaboration – an elusive brand with little to no advertising, and a mass-market high street brand whose ads are plastered on billboards all over the world. Perhaps this signifies the change in strategy by Renzo Rosso, the owner of Diesel, whose group acquired control of the Margiela fashion business in 2002. Margiela left his own namesake brand in October 2009 following speculations of creative differences with Rosso. This collaboration with H&M perhaps signifies Rosso’s intentions to increase the public awareness of the brand:

Rosso: ‘He <Martin Margiela> is here but not here.’ ‘We have a new fresh design team on board. We are focusing on young, realistic energy for the future; this is really Margiela for the year 2015.’

Up till now, the king of conceptual fashion has been hard to replace – Raf Simons and Haider Ackermann have both declined the position of creative director. A creative team of 20 something people now design for the brand – so does that mean Margiela’s talents are worth more than 20 creative brains? Hmmm, some food for thought.

I am a huge fan of MMM’s highly experimental and deconstructed designs, even though Darren my chum labels me more of a Christmas tree :p Although MMM is anything but cheap, the pieces are extremely special, well-made and timeless classics that can last through the decade. So when I buy, I go by the very scientific calculation of “Cost Per Wear”. *WINK*

Excited as I am, I am definitely planning to buy the whole H&M x Maison Martin Margiela collection – budget permitting! Meanwhile, I have blocked off 15 NoveMMMber 2012 on my agenda – no appointments please. I have a date with H&M x MMM :)

Fun Facts about Martin Margiela

FACT 1: Margiela is from Belgium, and considered to be the “seventh” member of the Antwerp Six. The Antwerp Six were six Belgium fashion designers that graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts (a super prestigious fashion design school) in the 80s, and then proceeded to drive to London in a van to show off their wares. The Antwerp Six is Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, and Marina Yee. Thanks to them, and Margiela, the Belgian fashion designers got a reputation for being quite avant-garde, a reputation they still have.

FACT 2: No one sees him. He doesn’t do personal appearances, and he never meets journalists.

FACT 3: He never referred to himself as “I”. It was always “Maison Martin Margiela is doing this…” or “We are doing this…” instead of “I am doing this…”

FACT 4: His clothes don’t have the brand name on the label, and his shops don’t have the name on the outside.

FACT 5: He is known for recycling garments.

FACT 6: He only communicates by fax (huh, what social media??)

FACT 7: His fashion shows involve a running commentary about the clothing, and all of his staff wear white lab coats.

FACT 8: He often costs his garments based on the number of hours spent making them.
