Angelina Singapore – A taste of Parisian chic

Angelina Singapore
With cafes sprouting up like mushrooms after a rainy season in Singapore, it’s pretty hard to get me excited about any new openings now. Angelina is an exception – ‘she’ has been on my mind since I first visited its flagship store at Rue Du Rivoli in Paris. The Belle Époque ambience, the pretty cakes and awesomely rich hot chocolate stayed in my mind. So imagine my glee when I learnt that Angelina has opened at Capitol Piazza.

Angelina Singapore
The two-storey tearoom is located just at the main entrance of the shopping mall, opposite Saint Andrew’s Cathedral / City Hall MRT station.

Angelina Singapore
It’s only been three days of opening and already full house. Angelina’s famous customers include Coco Chanel – if it’s good enough for the dame, it’s good enough for me. Cakes and dining options such as breakfast, sandwiches and risotto are available.

Bring home a taste of Parisian at the dessert boutique.

A must-try at Angelina, other than their amazing Hot Chocolate L’Africain (takeaway available too!), is their iconic Mont Blanc made with meringue, light whipped cream and chestnut paste.

Drooling, drooling…

Shop at its dessert boutique just next to the tearoom for delicatessen products
including jams, spreads, chocolates and bottled hot chocolate. They make pretty gifts too.

I had my eye on the chestnut cream, which would go well with bread as a morning spread, yum.

This is pretty interesting too – traditional honey gingerbread.

Now I don’t need to fly halfway round the world to have my hot chocolate. Nothing beats having it at the grand flagship boutique (which is at least 5 times the size of the Singapore store), but I do still look forward to chilling out at the tearoom with friends, reminiscing about my Parisian rendezvous and planning my next expedition.

Sunday Folks – Because the best things in life are sweet

Sunday FolksSingapore seems to be in a soft serve fad lately. Before Honey Creme came to town, another soft serve cafe had already been getting lots of good word-of-mouth. Started by the owners of Creamier, Sunday Folks is the first in Singapore to feature a soft-serve dessert concept, offering 6 flavours of soft serve ice cream. What’s even better, you can enjoy your soft serve with the crisp eggy waffles made with Creamier’s super-popular recipe in more spacious and elegant settings.

Sunday Folks

It is not difficult to spot the café from the row of restaurants along Chip Bee Gardens – just look for the crowd outside waiting for their table.

Sunday Folks

When you get there, put your name down on the electronic reservation system at the entrance. You can wait at the benches in front of the café, or take a little stroll nearby as they will send you a message when your table is ready. We queued for about 30 minutes.

Sunday Folks

The wood and copper interior gave an elegant feel to the cafe, making it a great place to hang out, or to impress a first date.

Sunday Folks

Everyone comes here for waffles
Waffles are a must here. So just pick a flavour from the six available, and decide if you would like any extra toppings to go with. And patiently wait for it to arrive.

Sunday Folks

Lazy to queue? Get a take-out in a chocolate cone :)
The freshly churned soft serve comes in six flavours – Earl Grey Lavender, Summer Strawberries, Roasted Pistachio, Madagascar Vanilla, Seasalt Gula Melaka and Dark Chocolate.

Sunday Folks

This must be the prettiest soft serve cone I have ever seen to-date.

Sunday Folks

The cafe also serves a range of cakes baked in-house such as Japanese Matcha Cake and Tokyo Yuzu Cheesecake, as well as coffee brewed with beans by local roaster Liberty Coffee.

Sunday Folks

With such a whimsical tap, Sunday Folks makes drinking tap water seem cool.

Sunday Folks

Eagerly awaiting our waffles…the smell of freshly baked ones were simply intoxicating…faster!! :D

Sunday Folks

Waffles come with standard toppings of strawberries and blueberries, and you can choose additional toppings from the mind-boggling variety available at the bar counter. Just a word of caution – don’t go overboard, or you may end up with a very impressive-looking $50 dessert LOL.

Sunday Folks

Enjoying his waffles

Sunday Folks

We ordered an earl grey lavender soft serve with an additional Matcha Nama Chocolate topping. We enjoyed the distinct lavender flavour and it went very well with the crisp eggy waffles which never seemed to lose its crispy texture.

Sunday Folks

We ordered an additional scoop of Dark Chocolate as well. I would have tasted all six flavours if my friend didn’t start protesting :p I will be back, Sunday baby.

Creamier – Ice Cream & Waffles in the Heartlands

Creamier

Teatime for today is Creamier’s signature waffles with a scoop of Honey Yuzu Lemon and Thai Milk Tea

I have been hearing so much about Creamier lately, I just had to risk an expanding waistline for a visit. There must be something special about this place if what I hear about the little cafe is “It’s always packed!” “I had to wait over an hour for my waffles!” “Very nice!” Well, let’s find out… :)

Creamier

I was quite amused to find the ice-cream parlor tucked below a block of housing flats in Toa Payoh (Singapore’s oldest housing estate), next to a PAP education centre. And it’s packed to the brim. Luckily there’s an open-air area just in front of the cafe where I promptly plonked myself down to enjoy my dessert; no need to squeeze and I can enjoy the breeze!

Creamier

Creamier’s ice cream is churned fresh in their kitchen using only natural quality ingredients. Coffee beans are from specialty coffee micro-roaster Papa Palheta so it should be a good cuppa. The big draw here are the waffles though…you haven’t been to Creamier if you haven’t tasted their waffles.

Creamier

Ooooo….what a palette! Can I have every one of each? :p
The ice cream comes in pretty interesting flavours such as Cucumber Ume Sorbet, Chocolate Peppercorn, Guava Orange Peel Sorbet and White Peach Chardonnay, and those who veer towards ‘safer’ tastes can try the popular Sea Salt Gula Melaka or a Plain Ole Chocolate.

Creamier

The little cafe is packed most of the time, so come during off-peak hours (weekday afternoons) or be prepared to wait for a table. And then wait for your waffles.

Creamier

Don’t want to wait for a table? Get a cone and enjoy it with friends on the bench outside! :)

Creamier

Better still, work out while you pig out! How cute :D

Creamier

We enjoyed our visit to Creamier. The ice cream tastes richer than the usual ones from ice cream parlous (now I know why they are called Creamier), and I appreciated that they had many interesting flavours. The springy waffles were crispy to every bite, even after 15 minutes. The little cafe will be on my mind whenever I am craving ice cream now :)
